Survivalism 101 - What Is A 72-Hour Kit?
6572-hour kits refer to a set of supplies that you have prepared for emergencies for which you can survive or be comfortable for 72 hours (or 3 days). Most survival enthusiasts recommend the 72 hour kit as a starting point for newbies or completely unprepared folks.
72-hour kits should be prepared ahead of time and stored in a convenient location for easy retrieval if you need to get out of your home or out of town quickly.
You can assmeble your own 72-hour kits or you can purchase pre-assembled ones including a backpack over at the Ready Store. If you have no preparations and you are very new to the process, buying a 72-hour kit might be a a good approach.
What Should Be Included In A 72-hour Kit?
- Food & Water - put some water puches or bottles along with some high calory energy bars or MREs in your pack
- Blackets & Ponchos - Also consider a small portable tent for shelter
- Waterproof matches, candles, hand warmers, flashlight and batteries
- An all-in-one tool or pocket knife
- Basic first-aid supplies
- Also, consider things specific to you such as an extra pair of eyeglasses or special medication that you or your family require
Again, your 72-hour kit might look different from mine depending upon your needs. Get started with the basics and then go from there.
As I've mentioned in some of my other articles, other considerations need to be made for babies or young children. For example, diapers, formula, etc. are items you would need for a baby.
Good luck and congratulations on taking initial steps to prepare you and your family!
