With A Cold Heart, Knowledge Of God Is Useless

Craving Knowledge

In the last two years, I've had a major resurgence in my hunger and thirst for truth.  Being exposed to the Biblical preaching from pastors like John Piper, Paul Washer, and others has shaken me, awakened me to the truth and reality of the gospel.  Growing up in a typical American Christian atmosphere did not produce a hunger or thirst for truth.  Hearing the gospel preached as it ought to be preached did however, produce a hunger or thirst for truth.  I praise God for doing this in my life.

Paul Washer, one of my favorite pastors preaches often about the ignorance of God that most Christians possess.  I completely agree with him.  Most of us have an image of God that we create because it feels better or brings us comfort.  This is extemely dangerous.  We need to turn to the Scriptures to understand God and to learn about God.  Theology is not for Pastors, it's for all Christians.  The beautiful thing is that doctrine and theology will lead to worship because the more you learn about God and the more you learn about yourself, the more you will worship the God of the Bible because you will see just how holy, just, righteous, awesome, eternal He is.  Similarly, you will see just how lowly, faithless, sinful, and weak you are.  You won't be able to do anything but worship.  This is the appropriate response.

A Problem

Recently, I've realized that some of my pursuit of knowledge and doctrine has not been producing a heart change in myself.  If my heart is cold towards God, it doesn't matter how smart or knowledgeable I am.  God wants my heart to be soft towards Him, to be soft towards Him and to be obedient.

If the things I'm learning about the character of Christ are not turning me into a more loving and faithful servant, then what's the point?

A Prayer

Lord, teach me your sacred truths.  Teach me about Yourself, so that I may know you and worship you.  Lord, allow your truths to penetrate my heart and change me.  Allow your truths to mold me to be more like Christ.  Thank you for revealing yourself to us and thank you for your Word.  May our faith grow and may we love more like you do.

It is written on your heart brother: your longing for Him. But He is also the perfect gentlemen and perfect lover. He doesn't force anyone and His first language is . . SILENCE : )

A great article. Perhaps Shane should not have read past the heading if he did not like it. I thought it was good.
