Making Money Online

When it comes to online income, you have a multitude of approaches that you can take. Should you launch your own blog or write for someone else? Should you write for a site like Hubpages or start your own site where you own the content yourself.

Taking a very high level approach, having your own blog, where you own the digital real estate, has more upside over the long term. With that said, it's also a much bigger challenge to get off the ground and running. For example, nobody knows that your site exists and getting traffic to a new site is difficult. When it comes to writing for Hubpages, you can get traffic pretty quickly because the site is already built, optimized, and indexed.

So, what should you do? I believe you should do both. Let me explain further...

Goal: A Thriving Blog

If you're like me, then the ultimate goal is a thriving blog. A thriving blog has the following characteristics:

  1. Growing readership
  2. A highly participatory community
  3. Increasing web traffic
  4. Income generating

After a few years of growing a blog, it may even be possible to scale back the effort required to maintain the blog. If you can reach such a stage, the income from the blog becomes increasingly passive.

A Recommended Strategy

If you are a new blogger or online writer, I believe that the best strategy for success is to start with a site like Hubpages.  The reasons for this are:

  1. By starting with Hubpages, you can more quickly establish a name, a reputation, and even some income for yourself.  Hubpages makes it easy to start getting traffic to your content.
  2. By having an established Hubpages presence prior to launching your own blog, you will be able to ramp up your blog much easier and faster.

Your own high-trafficked blog is your ultimate priority.  A few years from now, Hubpages will probably be a small piece of your overall strategy, but I believe in the beginning, it can provide great value.  Hubpages can provide some additional income over the long term as well.

Establish Your Hubpages Presence

I suggest that you work hard on building your Hubpages presence.  A great goal is to simply breach the score so that you can have the "nofollow" attribute removed from your links (currently above 75).  This ability to link to your future blog will be very beneficial.

Remember, to build a following on the topic that you plan to write about on your future blog.  Hopefully, your followers on Hubpages will translate to visitors and real traffic on your own site down the road.  Even building the reputation for the specific topic is more important that actual traffic moving from Hubpages to your own site.

Launch Your Blog Down The Road

It's important to keep a long term perspective during this journey.  The end game is a thriving blog with traffic and revenue.  It will be tempting to jump into the blog arena in order to hasten this final goal.  I'm telilng you that you will reach the goal quicker if you work on your Hubpages presence first.  Avoid the temptation and spending your time working on this first phase.

If you follow through with this first phase, phase two will be much cleaner and will develop quicker.

My Personal Experience

I did not take my own advice.  I started my own blog at 20smoney.com a couple years ago before I was exposed to Hubpages.  I have had some success but it has been a long road and slow growth. If I were to do it over again, I would definitely start with Hubpages as it would have made the journey of growing my own blog much easier.

I actually have used hubpages to promote some of my other blogs and information posted on the Web. I, however, am like you in that I started my own blog and then came over to hubpages. You're suggestion in this article seems to make sense though, about starting in the reverse manner.
